[ID: 113] Nitrogen and water uptake patterns in mature spruce, pine and their mixed stands at Främlingshem

PI: Reimo Lutter

The aim of the project is to describe mature spruce, pine and their mixed stands nitrogen and water uptake patterns. Novel stable-isotope tracing techniques of 15N compounds and 2H2-labeled water in pulse-chase are used to describe trees spatial below-ground root functioning and site occupancy. The project is carried out in Främlingshem trial. The experiment started in 2019 June where blocks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 were labelled with 15N and deuterium. The project will give new insights about the fundamental processes of spatial root functioning (nitrogen and water uptake) and rooting area of the two most important boreal tree species (Scots pine and Norway spruce).
