Effects of whole-tree thinnings, nitrogen fertilisation and wood-ash applications on carbon and nitrogen stocks in biomass and soils of a Scots pine stand in northern Sweden

During thinning operation, uses of harvest-residues in producing renewable energy can mitigate CO2 emission via substitute effect for fossil fuel. However, removals of the residues can also degrade biomass productivity and cause soil acidification. Combination of four treatments (conventional thinning, whole-tree thinning, with a compensatory fertilization, and with repeated fertilization), with split-plot based ash addition, we investigate biomass and soil carbon stocks in response to removals of harvest-residues.

Impacts of tree species identity and mixing on ecosystem C and N stocks

The original aim of this experiment was to compare the growth of Scots pine vs. Norway spruce, and their mixture at a medium fertility site near Främlingshem suitable for the growth of both species. Our aim was to evaluate the effects of tree species and their mixing on ecosystem C and N stocks, as well as on some of the important C fluxes.
